Studying and living in Ankara
Updated · Compare costs across Turkey
Ankara, the capital, is home to nearly 6 million people and to several of Turkey's best-known universities, including Middle East Technical University (METU) and Bilkent University, which both teach in English. It is a calmer, greener and more affordable city than Istanbul, built around government, research and universities.
Most large campuses are spread across the city's southern and western districts, so many students live close to campus and the city feels like a student town in term time.
Where the universities are
- Çankaya
- Middle East Technical University (METU), Bilkent University and Hacettepe University's Beytepe campus, all on large green campuses with dormitories.
- City centre
- Ankara University and other state universities have faculties in central districts, close to transport and shopping.
Monthly costs
We estimate 550 to 1,000 US dollars a month for most students in 2026, clearly below Istanbul. Campus dormitories at the big universities are the cheapest option; book early, because places for new students fill quickly.
Getting around
The metro, Ankaray light rail and city buses run on the AnkaraKart, and students can get discounted fares.
